Silver Slugger Awards

Each year, Major League managers and coaches vote on The Silver Slugger Award for the best offensive player at each position in each League.  Detroit's Victor Martinez took home the honor at the DH position.  His fellow MVP finalists, Mike Trout and Michael Brantley also won Silver Sluggers, as did World Series Champs Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey.

Volleyball

Harper Creek beat Marshall in 3 sets to win a second straight District Championship.  Charley Andrews with 19 kills, nine digs, and three blocks. Olivia Leson had 13 kills. The Beavers take their 52-8-1 record to Edwardsburg High School next Tuesday against Paw Paw in a Class B regional.

St. Phillip beat Bellevue 3-0 for its 15th straight District Championship.  Emily Schaub had three kills, 16 assists and a dig; Abby McKinzie had three aces, five kills, a block, six assists and four digs; Stephanie Chmiel had three aces and two digs; Kameron Haley had six aces and two digs; Megan Parker had two aces, four kills and three digs; Julia Slattery had four aces; Victoria Monathan had five kills; and Morgan Luoma and Annie Newton had an ace and two kills apiece.  The Tigers will play a regional semifinal Tuesday at Hillsdale Academy against Lansing Christian.

Mason beat Lakeview 3-1 to end the Spartans’ season.

Climax-Scotts beat Calhoun Christian 3-0.   Mary Smith had 14 kills; Emily Wagar had 22 kills and 12 digs.

Bronson wins another District Championship, beating Quincy 3-0.

Mendon beat Athens 3-0.

Tonight… Olivet will face Eaton Rapids in a district final.

Galesburg-Augusta plays Potterville.

High School Football

District Football Tonight….Lakeview hosts Portage Northern. The Spartans’ lone loss this season was to Portage Northern in the opening game of the season.  We’ll have the game at 6:35 on WBCK.

Harper Creek is at Eaton Rapids.

St. Philip will host Lawrence, the only team to beat them this season.

Olivet plays at Lansing Catholic.

NFL Football

The Browns beat the Bengals 24-3 on "Thursday Night Football". Cleveland's defense forced four turnovers and held Cincinnati to just 165 total yards of offense. Former MSU Spartan Brian Hoyer finished 15-of-23 for 198 yards for the Browns, who have won three straight and are now tied with Pittsburgh atop the AFC North at 6-and-3.

Detroit Pistons

The Pistons will host the Milwaukee Bucks tonight, going for their second win of the season.

Red Wings

The Red Wings start a four game home stand tonight at Joe Louis Arena against the New Jersey Devils.  Detroit is looking to stop a three-game slide after road losses this week to the Sabres, Senators and Rangers.  The Wings also host Tampa Bay, Chicago and Montreal over the next 9 days.

K-Wings

The Kalamazoo Wings host the Elmira Jackals tonight and tomorrow night at Wings’ Stadium.  Both teams are in second place in their respective divisions in the ECHL.  Listen to the WBCK Saturday morning show for your chance to see the K-Wings Saturday night at 7:30!    Rich Watson, Jeff Janofski and Joe Pursell won tickets for tonight.   Cory Williams and Joel Rzepka won tickets for Saturday’s game.

KCC Basketball

The KCC women’s basketball team started the season with a loss to Lakeland, 69-33.  Lexi Brautigam led the Bruins with 12 Points, 5 Rebounds and 2 Assists.

MSU Basketball

The Michigan State Spartans host St. Cloud State tonight at the Breslin Center.   MSU begins the regular season next Friday against Navy.

College Football

#8 Michigan State hosts #14 Ohio State Saturday in East Lansing in a battle of 7-1 teams.   Both teams are 4-0 in the Big Ten.  Broadcast time is 6:30pm Saturday on WBCK.  Michigan will try to even their record at 5 and 5 on the road at Northwestern. Broadcast time is 2:30 Saturday on Mix 104.9 WBXX.

Lions

The Lions host the Dolphins on Sunday.  Detroit is on top of the NFC North at 6-and-2.   Broadcast time is 12 noon Sunday on WBCK.

The Lions will be playing a regular-season game overseas next season.  The Lions will take on the Chiefs at London's Wembley Stadium in Week Eight next October. Kansas City will be the designated home team. It's one of three London games in the NFL's International Series.

Nascar

This Sunday, the Chase goes to Phoenix International Raceway for the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500, the last race of the eliminator round before the season finale at Homestead.
