Lions -Controversial Call

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell commented on the pass interference penalty that was reversed late in the game against the Cowboys. Caldwell says he was angry for the team and the fans about the incident. He called for the NFL to use replay on such calls in the future to take the element of human error out of the play.   Caldwell also said that one call made against the Lions was not the only reason they lost the game, as they had other opportunities to win in the fourth quarter.  NFL referee Peter Morelli is defending the decision to pick up a flag on a key pass interference call in Sunday's Cowboys-Lions game.  Dallas linebacker Anthony Hitchens was initially flagged while defending Detroit tight end Brandon Pettigrew on a third-and-one from the Dallas 46 with 8:25 to play.

After conversing, officials decided to pick up the flag leading to a Lions' punt instead of a first down.  The Cowboys then drove down the field for the go-ahead score. Morelli said after the game that one of the officials decided the contact was minimal and it was more of a face-guarding play that did not warrant pass interference.  Face guarding is a penalty in college football, but not in the NFL.

Lions Season

Lions’ coach Jim Caldwell addressed several issues in his final press conference of the season yesterday, a day after Detroit's loss to Dallas in their wild card playoff game.  Caldwell said the last loss of the season is always a shock to the system, but he thinks the foundation has been laid for the upcoming year.  He said the offense needs to be more consistent next season and signing free agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will be one of the team's highest priorities.
