Pistons

The Pistons pulled within two with 15 seconds left but couldn't pull off the comeback as they lost in Toronto 114-110.   D.J. Augustin had 35 points and eight assists replacing Brandon Jennings in the starting lineup. It was the Pistons first game since it was announced Jennings would miss the rest of the season with a torn achilles. Greg Monroe had 21 points and 16 rebounds for Detroit, which has lost three of four. They host the Cavs tomorrow night.

Pro Bowl

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford helped Team Irvin beat Team Carter, 32-28, in the Pro Bowl from University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona last night. Stafford threw for 316 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as he was named the Offensive MVP.  He was named to the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement last week, and is the first Lions quarterback to participate in the NFL's annual all-star game since Greg Landry in 1971.   Lions wide receiver Golden Tate hauled in two catches for 98 yards in the win.  Lions safety Glover Quin made five tackles and broke up one pass.


West Michigan Wolves

The West Michigan Wolves Jr. Hockey team beat the Bulldogs in Chicago 5-3 on Friday.  They beat the Freeze in La Crosse 5-4 on Saturday, but lost to them on Sunday by a score of 1-0.  The Wolves move into a first place tie with Wisconsin in the Central division, with 8 regular season games remaining.  Their next game is Wednesday February 4th at the Rink against the Metro Jets.

Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings return from the All-Star break tomorrow night to face the Florida Panthers on the road.  It's the first of a two-game road trip. Detroit has 63 points, one-point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for first place in the Atlantic Division with a game in hand.    The NHL All-Star game was played in Columbus on Sunday….at 17-12 game.

College Basketball

Over the weekend...

Michigan State lost to Nebraska, 79-77.  Terran Petteway scored a season-high 32 points for Nebraska. The Spartans are at Rutgers tomorrow night.

The MSU Women’s team beat Nebraska 77-71, as four players scored in double digits,

including 23 points from sophomore forward Aerial Powers.

WMU lost to Akron by 2 points on Saturday.

KCC lost to LCC, 91-81.  The KCC women beat LCC, 65-53.  Kayla Freeman had 17 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists.

 

Michigan put up a valiant effort, but fell short in a 69-64, overtime loss to number-five Wisconsin at Crisler Arena on Saturday.  Michigan is home on Tuesday against Nebraska. Newt Callahan called in and won tickets to the game on WBCK.

Coach K wins 1000th

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski earned his 1,000th career win on Sunday. The sixth-ranked Blue Devils rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half for a 77-68 victory over St. John's at Madison Square Garden. The 67-year-old Krzyzewski is the first men's head coach in Division One history to reach 1,000 career wins. The Hall of Famer holds a career record of 1,000-and 308.

Ernie Banks Death

Details are emerging on the death of 'Mr. Cub, ' Ernie Banks. His wife, Liz, says it was a heart attack.  Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that Banks' statue in Wrigley Field will be moved to Daley Plaza from Wednesday through Saturday so fans can pay their respects.

Tiger Avoid Arbitration

The Detroit Tigers yesterday announced the club has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with right-handed pitcher Al Alburquerque, thus avoiding arbitration.  Alburquerque was their best reliever in 2014 with a 2.51 ERA in 57 innings pitched and 63 strikeouts in 72 games. With this signing, the club has reached agreement with all its arbitration eligible players for 2015.

Golf

Bill Haas made a couple big birdies and saved some huge pars down the stretch on Sunday to shoot a final-round 67 and win the Humana Challenge by one shot over five others.
