College Basketball

Michigan lost 82-78 in double overtime on the road at Northwestern. Zak Irvin scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wolverines, while Aubrey Dawkins had 21 points and Spike Albrecht ended the night with 16. The Wolverines finish the regular season as they host Rutgers on Saturday.

In the Mid American Conference… Central Michigan clinched at least a share of the Mid-American Conference title with an 85-77 defeat of Toledo on Tuesday night.

Eastern Michigan held on to beat Ball State 67-60. Northern Illinois beat WMU 65-63.

The MSU Spartans will host Purdue tonight in the final home game this season for State. ….7pm on WBCK.

Tigers Spring Training

The Detroit Tigers used the long ball early and often as Detroit opened Grapefruit League play with a 15-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles in Lakeland yesterday.  Ian Kinsler hit a three-run homer in the second, Yoenis Cespedes made his Tigers debut with a grand-slam in the fourth and Aaron Westlake added a three-run shot in the sixth.  Kyle Lobstein got the win, giving up two hits and striking out one in two innings of work. Infielder Nick Castellanos left the game in the second inning after he was hit on the left hand by a pitch from Ubaldo Jimenez. Castellanos did not return, but X-rays were negative. The Tigers play the Orioles again this afternoon in Sarasota. Anibal Sanchez is expected to get the start for Detroit.

Red Wings

The Red Wings host the New York Rangers tonight.  New Wings forward Erik Cole and defenseman Marek Zidlicky practiced for the first time with the team yesterday and could be in the lineup tonight against the Rangers.

Pistons

The Pistons play in New Orleans tonight. Detroithas lost three straight and are in last place in the Central Division.  They are two and a half games out of the eighth and final playoff spot.   The Pistons will also stop in Houston on Friday.

Boys Basketball

The Battle Creek Central Bearcats used a 17-0 run between the first and second quarter to lead them past the Lakeview Spartans Tuesday 61-50.  Wendell White led the Bearcats with 16.

Pennfield 76, Galesburg-Augusta 45. Kyle Moore had a game-high 15 points.

St. Philip 80, Litchfield 36.   Hunter Haley and Dreyson English each had 15.
