Six people were killed, including five children, in a fire that happened at a southwest Michigan motel in the early hours Saturday morning. The Associated Press says it happened at Cosmo Extended Stay Motel in Berrien County's Sodus Township. The 911 call came in at around at 1:45am. When firefighters arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames.

The Berrien County Sheriff's office says 26-year-old Kiarre Curtis, and five children ranging in age from 2 to 10 years old likely died from smoke inhalation. Her husband and a 1-year-old child reportedly survived. All eight were staying in the same room. Eight other occupants were treated for smoke inhalation and released from the hospital. Authorities report that 27 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire and 90 percent of the property was damaged by either smoke, fire or water.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
