Medical marijuana will once again be on the Battle Creek City Commission’s mind when they next meet.

According to the Commission’s agenda for their January 16 meeting, two ordinances are set to be introduced; one which would allow for medical marijuana businesses to apply for licenses, and another which would allow for the zoning of those businesses. The zoning ordinance had been set to be introduced last month, but it was delayed, with officials saying the two ordinances should be introduced and voted on at the same time.

If the city commission approves these two ordinances, medical marijuana growers, processors, transporters, testers, and dispensaries would all be allowed within Battle Creek city limits. There would be limitations for where someone could open, including requiring they stay away from schools and churches among other things.

The state of Michigan began allowing medical pot businesses last year. A survey conducted by the city in 2017 showed that 77% of respondents supported medical marijuana in Battle Creek in some form or another.
