Athlete of the Week: Jake Herbers
Jake Herbers, of Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, is one of many dual-sport athletes in the fall. Like two other past Meijer-WBCK Athlete of the Week winners, he also plays soccer and football for the Spartans.
Lately, Jake has been recognized more for his talents on the gridiron instead of the pitch. He's been noticed by several Division I schools for his kicking and punting skills, spending all four years giving the Spartans better field position and trapping opponents deep in their own territory. It was one of the keys to leading the Purple and White to a playoff spot last season and their first undefeated regular season in school history. The team is 3-1 this year.
On the soccer side, Herbers minds the net as the goaltender, helping the Spartans to a victory earlier this week against Plainwell with six saves in a 2-0 shutout.
