We were curious about what it is like at the Calhoun County Jail, so we recently reached out to Sheriff Matt Saxton to see if we could come and tour the facility and ask a few questions.

The Calhoun County Jail has programs available for education, religion, and recovery from addiction. They have partnerships with Battle Creek Public Schools and Haven Of Rest for education and recovery programs respectively. Their is currently around 600 inmates in the jail (as of the time the video was recorded). Sheriff Saxton says there is always room and that overcrowding is never an issue there. The budget to operate the jail is around $12 million a year, but reserved beds that are rented from outside the county help offset over half the cost to taxpayers annually.

In this video tour of the jail, you will see some of the cell pods, outdoor recreation areas, the barber shop, classrooms and the administrative control room that monitors and manages the higher secured areas. A mural that tells a 'life story' is also shown that was painted by a man back in the 1990s telling of his life struggles and a journey to recovery.

This is the second of a two part video series with News Director Nico Berrios.
