A former archbishop of Minnesota that was in town to help in Battle Creek has chosen to leave.

Parishioners at St. Philip Catholic Church learned Thursday morning that Archbishop John Nienstedt has decided to not stay after two weeks in town to help current pastor Reverend John Fleckenstein.

Fleckenstein asked for Nienstedt’s assistance while he receives treatment for an undisclosed illness.

According to a letter signed today (January 21st), Fleckenstein mentioned that Nienstedt resigned due to the unintended discord with his presence.

Nienstedt resigned last summer from his archdiocese in Minnesota after claims of sexual abuse by clergy. He was not charged in the case.
