One person was hurt and a large amount of liquid asphalt was spilled after a work truck crashed near Albion yesterday afternoon.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says that around 4:51pm Tuesday, the work truck had been heading Westbound in the 25,000 block of W. Michigan Ave. in Sheridan Township when it lost control and rolled onto the edge of the railroad tracks. The driver, a 62-year-old Albion man, was taken to the Oaklawn hospital in Marshall to be treated. His condition was not given.

Around 150 gallons of black liquid driveway asphalt sealer was discharged from the truck, and cleanup efforts for the spill are now underway with coordination between the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Amtrak. It's unclear how severe the environmental impact from this spill might be.

The railroad track itself suffered minor damage, prompting Amtrak to temporarily place a speed restriction in the area.

What caused the driver of the truck to lose control and crash remains unknown.
