Battle Creek City Commissioner Mark Behnke was among two dissenters to a June 21 vote on the next city budget (Commissioner Deb Owens was the other). Behnke cites concerns over a city tax hike to fund bond payments for a new police headquarters building downtown.

"Let's try to live within our means," Behnke said on WBCK. "Maybe we can use these monies elsewhere."

Behnke said he is not thoroughly convinced the city needs a new police headquarters building, and suggested City Manager Rebecca Fleury and her team, while commending them for their efforts, could have better prepared commissioners for that possibility.
