A Battle Creek man accused of creating child pornography has been sentenced to federal prison.

44-year-old Matthew Andaluz pleaded guilty to producing child porn in June, after he was arrested in December; Andaluz originally came to the attention of authorities after investigators determined that a series of images showing the abuse of a 10-year-old girl had been taken at his home in Springfield. Those images have been found in various federal child porn cases throughout the country.

MLive reports that Andaluz moved to Battle Creek after he befriended a local woman, and that he began sexually abusing one of her children shortly afterwards; the victim’s mother reportedly committed suicide this year.

At the sentencing in Grand Rapids Federal Court, Andaluz expressed remorse, and his attorney asked for a 15-year sentence due to his lack of criminal record and his mental health problems; however, he was sentenced to serve 30 years.

Also arrested in this case was Elizabeth Evans of Battle Creek, who was charged with sexual exploitation of a child; she pleaded not guilty at the time of her arraignment.
