A Battle Creek man was killed early Saturday morning in a shooting that saw the suspect escape the scene.

The Battle Creek Police Department says that around 1:11am Saturday, November 25, officers and first responders were called to the 300 block of Oneita St, to find the 41-year-old victim lying in the street with several gunshot wounds. Authorities say efforts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful.

The victim, identified as Fernando Devon Paige, had reportedly been in a nearby house with friends before he was shot; however, what lead up to the shooting remains unknown, as police say that “there were no other reports of arguing or of any problems Paige had recently." In a release, the BCPD says that Paige had recently been released from jail, and his family told them he hadn't had any problems since he was released.

When authorities arrived on the scene, no one was in the area, but investigators learned that an older, dark colored car might have left the area shortly after shots were heard.

Battle Creek detectives are now looking into this case, and they ask that anyone with tips contact them, or call Silent Observer to remain anonymous.
