The most recent update on The Richard Piet Show from Battle Creek Police included a brief discussion of a recent raid at the Rodeway Inn on Beckley Road, as well as discussion of recent home invasions south of downtown.

In those recent cases, residents awoke to find their homes had been burglarized while they slept. Chief Jim Blocker and Officer Chris Rabbit discussed specific tips homeowners can take in order to make their homes less attractive to burglars. They also discussed a service the department provides which actually provides residents with a no-cost visit from police to review your home and offer specific suggestions about making it safer.

Among their suggestions:

  • Trim bushes and landscaping to make it less attractive for burglars to be hidden by it
  • Use inside and outside lighting to suggest activity in the home
  • Do not leave valuables visible to someone who can see inside windows

Hear all their recommendations, including what Chief Blocker calls a "Facebook for neighborhoods" website that helps residents stay connected. Click the video below.
