The City of Battle Creek announced on Monday that effective immediately, they would be taking applications for potential candidates of their rental rehabilitation program.

The program is intended to renovate rental projects “to improve housing options and increase neighborhood vibrancy”. The city says that the projects that will take priority include ones locating in or near the downtown area or other business corridors, projects where the owner is also an occupant of the unit, and projects that turn vacant space into productive use.

The program was originally implemented in September of 2016; so far, one project has begun, while several others are in the planning process.

If you own a suitable building, you are eligible to apply; the funding comes from Community Development Block Grant Funds from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development; around $175,000 is available for the program, which runs through June of 2018.

To apply, go to Room 117 in Battle Creek City Hall, or visit the City's website to learn more.
