Two men from Lansing have now been arraigned on several crimes after a bust turned up evidence of human trafficking in Battle Creek, police say.

The Battle Creek Police Department coordinated with several agencies, including the US Department of Homeland Security, the Ingham County Sheriff's Office, the Lansing Police Department, and the Michigan State Police on the investigation, which began after police received a tip on January 4; based on information regarding drugs and prostitution at a Battle Creek area hotel, 34-year-old Alexander Murray was arrested at the scene on warrants from Arizona, while the second suspect initially fled.

This incident led to the coordinated police action in the Lansing area.

Murray, along with 39-year-old Kevin Nemeth, were both arraigned January 11 on several charges including human trafficking, and are currently lodged in the Calhoun County Jail.

The BCPD says that two victims were saved during the course of this investigation, with further information regarding these victims not being released.

This investigation and bust coincides with a multi-state effort to crack down on human trafficking in Michigan and across the United States. January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and the Michigan State Police are joining with agencies in neighboring states on an initiative to fight human trafficking along the highways.
