As soon as the new Mackinac Bridge license plate came out in Michigan, one of my friends veered her car immediately to the nearest Secretary of State office and got one. More and more, they've popped up, and I've heard others comment on how great they look. But, sometimes style doesn't always mean function.

About a month ago, the Secretary of State responded to police complaints by quietly unveiling a redesign of the bridge plate, with a yellower background and black letters. Police contended the original design, with white letters on an orange sunshine background, was hard to read under certain conditions. Here's the full story from the Detroit Free Press.
