State Sen. Virgil Smith, D-Detroit, and I agree on something.

As reported by the Lansing State Journal, Sen. Smith offered a resolution that would require a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate, as well as statewide vote of the people, to give the death penalty to cop killers.

“If you kill a cop, you’re the most egregious criminal out there," Smith told the Lansing State Journal. "If you’re willing to go that far, there’s no telling what you’re willing to do. There should be no mercy at that point.”

Michigan officially banned capital punishment in 1847, and that ban was bolstered in the 1962 constitutional convention.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Michigan is only one of 18 states to abolish the death penalty.

Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, a former Sheriff and strong advocate for victims of crime, said he’s against the death penalty in all circumstances because the risk of making a mistake is just too high, according to the Lansing State Journal.

“Occasionally, the system makes a mistake,” Jones told the Lansing State Journal. “If a mistake is made, we can’t dig somebody up and say we’re sorry. If somebody’s in prison, we can release them. I’m firmly against the death penalty.”

The resolution has been assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Let’s us discuss this today on my show the Live with Renk show, which airs Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon, to let me know your thoughts at (269) 441-9595.
