A fire at a home near Goguac Lake in Battle Creek led to a man's death Friday morning.

The Battle Creek Fire Department says that around 3:59am Friday, crews responded to a structure fire in the 200 block of Martha Ave. near Capital Ave. SW; initial reports indicated that someone might be inside the home. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire in the main living quarters of the home, and conducted an immediate search.

Inside, they found a deceased elderly man, as well as a family pet. The victim's identity was not disclosed.

Authorities eventually brought the fire under control, with the blaze causing "extensive damage" to the roof, kitchen and living room. Around $170,000 in damage was done. Right now, the cause of this fire remains unknown, but it is being investigated.
