Michigan's 63rd House District pits three candidates against each other on Election Day. Representative Dave Maturen (R-Brady Township) is being challenged by Democrat Lynn Shiflea (not pictured) and Green Party candidate John Anthony LaPietra, an attorney from Marshall.

Maturen, who succeeded Republican Jace Bolger in 2014, is approaching the end of his freshman term in the Michigan House. During that time, Maturen has served on the House Tax Policy Committee as well as Energy Policy, Local Government, and Transportation and Infrastructure committees.

Maturen has championed a bill to change tax policy for big box stores, and co-sponsored legislation related to veterans, property tax assessments and tribunal disputes.

LaPietra, an attorney, has previously run for office unsuccessfully, including the Calhoun County Clerk's race in 2008 and 2012, for Michigan Secretary of State in 2010 and Michigan Attorney General in 2014. He was the Green Party candidate in each of those races.

LaPietra cites the main pillars of the Green Party platform as his basis and motivation for running.

Shiflea did not respond to a invitation for an interview on WBCK.
