An early morning fire at the Calhoun Area Career Center caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage Tuesday morning.

The Battle Creek Fire Department says that they were called to the building on E. Roosevelt Ave. around 4am Tuesday morning, and arrived to find smoke coming from the roof of the building. It was determined that the fire started in the tool storage area of the auto shop, and that the sprinkler system was not effectively fighting the blaze.

Crews did manage to put out the fire, but classes at the CACC were cancelled due to smoke created by burning plastics, and so that the sprinkler system could be brought back into service. No one was injured due to the fire, and the cause remains under investigation.

The BCFD says that around $45,000 in damage was done, but since fire crews responded so quickly, millions of dollars in property damage was avoided.
