Battle Creek Firefighters fought a blaze in the 100 block of North Broad Street, shortly after 6 AM, Friday morning.

When they arrived on the scene, a neighbor informed the crew that they thought that the structure was possibly occupied, thinking they may have heard someone inside. Thick smoke and fire hampered search efforts. As conditions became intense, dispatch alerted the firefighters that the owner had been contacted and that no one was home.

Crews were hampered by extreme weather conditions, an extremely weak floor on the first level and a downed power line in the rear of the structure. The fire was extinguished, but a firefighter suffered a back injury due to a fall, outside, in slippery conditions.

The home suffered extensive damage and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
