January is Radon Action Month, and area health experts are using this opportunity to remind people to test their homes.

The Barry-Eaton District Health Department says that radon occurs naturally in the ground, and can often accumulate inside homes; this can be a problem, since Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. It’s estimated that one in eight homes in Michigan have high levels of Radon, so residents are encouraged to conduct an easy test this month. BEDHD says that Barry and Eaton County residents can pick up Radon testing kits for free in January, at various locations.
