Legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate is aimed at preventing a shutdown of the federal government similar to the 35-day partial shutdown we recently suffered.

Michigan's Senator Gary Peters announced on Thursday that he was co-sponsoring the "Stop STUPIDITY (Shutdowns Transferring Unnecessary Pain and Inflicting Damage In The Coming Years) Act", introduced by Democrat Senator Mark Warner from Virginia. The bill would automatically renew funding for government agencies at the same level as the previous fiscal year, adjusted for inflation; the only exempted agencies would be the Legislative branch and the Executive Office of the President, with the intent that this would "force both sides to come together and reach an agreement".

On the bill, Senator Peters said:

The recent shutdown had a devastating impact on our economy and many American families, including federal workers and contractors. Simply put, this should never happen again. That’s why I have helped sponsor legislation to prevent future federal government shutdowns, and I urge Congress to pass it.

The U.S. Government may again enter a partial shutdown if an agreement is not reached by February 15 on funding security features at the southern border.
