Is our culture taking this diversity issue too far?

The American Mirror is reporting that the University of Florida has a Bias Education and Response Team which is available 24/7 to respond to any reported incidents of bias, including Halloween costumes that upset their college students.

The University of Florida posted to their website the following:

If you choose to participate in Halloween activities, we encourage you to think about your choices of costumes and themes. Some Halloween costumes reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures, or religions.  Regardless of intent, these costumes can perpetuate negative stereotypes, causing harm and offense to groups of people.

I understand that as the previous generation ages they believe that the next generation is taking the culture down a dangerous path.  The question to me is: is this new wave of culture change, truly changing our culture for the worse?  At what point do we say enough is enough.  Is this different than previous generation concerns?

It is interesting to note that The University of Florida’s Division of Student Affairs Diversity and Social Justice put out a statement that students at their University should
“respect” the “diversity” of other students.  Well than why do they “respect” the “diversity” of some students but not others?  Halloween is part of the American culture so by watering it down how does that “respect” our culture?  These days of micro-aggressions means someone is always going to complain that they are offended by something.

The University of Florida’s Bias Education and Response Team stated:

As a community, we aspire to demonstrate integrity, respect, and compassion that strives to maintain an affirming campus climate for all members of our community,

Does respecting the members of some community then trample on the respect of other members of their community?

This is not only happening at the University of Florida, it is also happening at the The University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.  The University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse is planning to host a seminar titled “Is Your Costume Racist?”

This seminar is being hosted by their Ethnic and Racial Studies Department, which also offer’s student’s classes on white privilege theory “Food and Race in the United States.”

Am I being just an old fuddy duddy or is there something to be concerned about here?

Let’s talk about this today on The Live with Renk Show which airs Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon. To let me know your thoughts during the show please call (269) 441-9595.
