The I-8 Begins Conference Play – HS Football-Week 2

As we get ready for the second week of the High School Football season, some things have really stood out after opening week. All five city teams showed their worth in Week 1, yet one team has a victory to start the season. St. Philip definitely showed their veteran caliber in a dominate win over Kingston. Battle Creek Central, Pennfield and Lakeview all lost in the closing minutes, while Harper Creek struggled to find consistency in their opener.

During last week's Coaches Corner, Beavers head coach Ed Greenman said that his team was not prepared and will have to have a perfect week to pick up their first win of the season. The Beavers will not only open their home schedule, they also begin conference play in the new Interstate 8 Conference, as they battle the Jackson Northwest Mounties.

After spending 18 years in the Capital Area Activities Conference (and several reincarnations of the conference) the Mounties will look to continue their momentum from last season's 5-4 finish, their first winning season since 2008. Even with the winning record, the Mounties have never made the playoffs in school history and look to do so in the new conference.

The Beavers will see a Mounties squad that fell 34-14 to Eaton Rapids last week. The one thing that falls in the Mounties favor is the 5-1 record they hold lifetime against Harper Creek, having last played in 1982 when the two schools were in the Twin Valley (Northwest was a 14-0 winner). Northwest played four seasons in the Twin Valley (1979-1982), but played the Beavers three times (going 2-1).
