When an emergency vehicle is approaching, do you know the proper procedure for getting out of the way?

Yes, you are supposed to get out of the way and let them through.

In El Paso, Texas, folks apparently needed to be educated on this procedure so much, the local fire department produced a video showing the proper (and improper) way to do it. We asked Battle Creek Police Chief Jim Blocker and Calhoun County Sheriff Matt Saxton to view the video and tell us what they thought. Here's the video:

Both Blocker and Saxton were in agreement - the video is a good tool and does, indeed, show the proper way to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle (fire truck, police car, ambulance) when their answering a call with lights and siren.

In fact, they were enthused about the notion of creating a similar local video which can be used in this area.
