City, Area Schools Stay Alive: HS Basketball – March 5

On Wednesday, three city girls basketball teams punched their tickets to the MHSAA District Finals on Friday as they advance in their respective semifinals. Lakeview, Harper Creek and St. Philip will be back in action for the finals, along with five other area schools. Another city squad, Calhoun Christian will play in the Class D final at Climax-Scotts against Martin in their first taste of postseason play this season.

Tonight, the Boys' squads will wrap up their regular season schedules, with two city teams in action. While the Harper Creek Beavers hit the road to battle the St. Joseph Bears, the St. Philip Tigers end their season at home with the Jackson Christian Royals.

These two teams is just a precursor to district play next week, as they play again at the Tiger Den in the Class D District Semifinals on Wednesday. The Tigers have won five of their last six games, including Tuesday's 80-36 walloping of the Litchfield Terriers. They also play slightly better at home, taking a 6-2 record into tonight. With a win tonight, paired with a Climax-Scotts loss, the Tigers will split the South Central Athletic Association's West Division title.

The Royals were not challenged in the SCAA's Central Division, but have struggled against solid teams in other divisions and conferences this year. They have lost two of their last three games following Tuesday's 50-42 defeat to Brooklyn Columbia Central. The Royals will carry a 6-3 road record into tonight.
