Two of the best 8-Man football teams in the state proved their worth in a fantastic Week 9 match-up.

The visiting St. Philip Fighting Tigers scored first and never relinquished the lead, as they held off the defending 8-Man champion Lawrence Tigers 47-44. St. Philip held a 17-point lead twice on the night, but were held scoreless in the final quarter for Lawrence to make a comeback with two scores.

Senior quarterback Brenden Gausselin threw for 242 yards on 11-of-17 passing with three touchdown tosses to lead St. Philip. He also scored twice on the ground, part of a 135-yard, 18-carry night. Senior David Downey also returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score to go with a 45-yard touchdown reception and a 13-yard scoring run.

The St. Philip defense forced three turnovers, including a fumble that set up their first score of the night.

Not to be outdone, Lawrence senior quarterback Hunter Coombs threw five touchdown passes to go with two interceptions in his 32-of-51 night for 321 yards. He also ran 28 times for 189 yards and a score. Connor Walters-McDaniel caught 14 passes for 121 yards and three scores. Tanner Jackson had five receptions for 91 yards and two scores.

Here are the rest of the scores, including playoff berths for Lakeview and Olivet, and a three-way tie atop the SMAC East including Lakeview and Battle Creek Central.
