Just Keep Winning – HS Football-Week 7

When you look at Battle Creek's high school football landscape, you easily notice that one team is a win away from the postseason, two need to win two of their last three, and the lone 8-Man team continues to mow down teams in their schedule. We enter the final third of the schedule and for the teams still with a shot at the postseason, these teams will have to take each game one week at a time.

This week, we will head to Coldwater, as the Harper Creek Beavers will take on the surprising Cardinals on Homecoming. The new-look Beavers have looked stellar since making their change at quarterback, placing David Thompson under center and former starter Colton Swims in the backfield. The offense has been the driving force of the Beavers in their three-game winning streak, while the defense has remained stout.

They run into a Cardinals squad that made the playoff for the first time in school history last year and are one win away from locking up a postseason bid. They dropped a 35-24 decision to Jackson Lumen Christi last week to put them in a tie with the Beavers for second place in the Interstate 8. The Cardinals also look to end a 21-game losing streak to the Beavers, part of a 33-17-1 record in favor of Harper Creek, when the rivalry started in 1963.

Also on the docket this week, the Lakeview Spartans look to earn their fifth win and a postseason spot with Homecoming against Loy Norrix. There's a battle for second in the Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference's East Division, as Battle Creek Central travels to Mattawan. In the I-8, Pennfield travels to Charlotte to take on the Orioles. The state-ranked St. Philip Tigers are on the road for the final time this regular season, battling Waldron in 8-Man.
