Governor Snyder has signed legislation naming a stretch of highway in Battle Creek after a police detective killed in the line of duty.  The bill signed by the governor designates a portion of Business Loop I-94 as the “Detective LaVern S. Brann Memorial Highway”.
The 44-year old Brann was shot and killed while investigating a homicide in May 2005. He was a 20 year veteran of the force. Snyder said "Detective LaVern made the ultimate sacrifice for his community and it is an honor to name this portion of I-94 in memory of him."
A number of highways have been named after first responders and noted community figures under the Michigan Memorial Highway Act, which allows for the naming of highways in the state.
