A Kalamazoo man who was caught in the act of shoplifting was arrested after he managed to escape and hide in a home over the weekend.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says that around 2:09pm Saturday, officers were called to the store in the 2100 block of Parkview Ave. on reports of shoplifting; they made contact, and as they were attempting to detain their suspect, he threw a handgun to the side and managed to pull away and escape.

The area was searched as the man fled on foot, but officers lost sight of him as he fled on Logan Ave.

Investigators were, however, able to determine his identity, and figured out he was hiding in a residence in the 2200 block of Logan Ave. A search warrant was obtained, and the Kalamazoo SWAT team was called in to execute it. The suspect, a 32-year-old Kalamazoo man, was taken into custody without any injuries.

The suspect is now facing charges of Retail Fraud, Resisting and Obstructing, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Home Invasion, and Receiving and Concealing. The firearm the suspect allegedly had was also found to be stolen.
