A man accused of murdering his former brother-in-law has now been charged.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that on Monday, 29-year-old Stephen Getter of Olivet was charged with open murder and felony firearm in Calhoun County District Court. Authorities say that Getter shot and killed 28-year-old Robert Barroso of Battle Creek.

Barroso had been missing since December 27, and a body found Friday, January 6 was determined to be him. His body was found with several gunshot wounds, and an autopsy showed he had been stabbed several times as well.

The suspect and victim had reportedly been lifelong friends. However family members say that the pair loved the same woman, and there were questions about who was the father of that woman's child, allegedly leading to animosity.

A preliminary examination for Getter is set for January 23.
