Michigan was the site of 1,745 drug overdoses in 2014. According to numbers from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, drug overdoses were up 14 percent from 2013. The department points out that the state had more drug overdose fatalities than car crashes, with 876 people dying in car accidents during the same year. Opioid and heroin overdoses made up the largest chunk, accounting for 57 percent of the deaths.
