Congrats Michigan, we are no longer in the top 10 of outbound move states according to data from United Van Lines 2017 study.

  2. New Jersey
  3. New York
  4. Connecticut
  5. Kansas
  6. Massachusetts
  7. Ohio
  8. Kentucky
  9. Utah
  10. Wisconsin      55%

The top inbound states of 2017 were:

  1. Vermont         68%
  2. Oregon
  3. Idaho
  4. Nevada
  5. South Dakota

According to the Tax Foundation, there is a relationship between taxes and migration, in the article about the relationship they were quoted stating:

Individuals move for a variety of factors…Climate, job opportunities, family, among others, impact the decision to relocate. Taxes can influence the decision too.  Tax rates and structure affect a state’s economy; states with less burdensome tax structures and lower rates tend to have better economic growth…Increased job opportunities can result from the better economic growth.

Specifically when it comes to taxation the Tax Foundation stated:

Someone moving to Chicago for a new job could decide to live in Illinois or commute from Indiana…Indiana's 3.3 percent individual income tax rate could be an encouragement to locate in that state over Illinois' 3.75 percent rate. An individual moving to the Washington, D.C., area could decide to live in Virginia instead of the District because income taxes are lower.

With a more friendly business attitude by the Republican Governor and Legislature more people want to stay in Michigan and that is only good news for our states.

Last week I asked the question why do you live in Michigan, the answer is becoming more apparent.  Not only do we want to live in Michigan because of the beauty of the state but the job opportunities the state offers.
