Authorities are still trying to confirm the identity of the driver of a car that entered a Calhoun County river a week ago.

The City of Battle Creek says that police investigators are still not sure if the driver was 31-year-old Cortez Lewis of Detroit; Lewis was reported missing by his girlfriend Sunday, the day after the Hyundai sedan supposedly crashed into the river.

As well, a bumper that was found in the river was determined to be from a sedan that Lewis’ girlfriend had rented, and cell phone data placed Lewis at Dickman Rd. and Capital Ave. Saturday morning.

Lewis is described by the city as a black male, who stands around 5 foot 9 inches tall and weighs around 195 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

A search by air of around 20 miles of the Kalamazoo River Thursday by the Civil Air Patrol was unsuccessful in finding any evidence of the vehicle. A helicopter mounted with cameras flew about 900 feet above the river, from where the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek rivers meet west to Morrow Lake in Galesburg.

Authorities are now working to determine what steps the investigation should take next.
