Fire officials in Battle Creek are asking residents in the Washington Heights area to be on guard after two homes had electric meter fires Friday morning. In fact, they even knocked on doors on Oaklawn Avenue between Kendall and Howland Streets to notify as many neighbors as possible of the situation. Meanwhile, Consumers Energy was in the area making repairs in response to the fires.

Crews responded to the 100 block of Oaklawn Avenue at around 8:20 for an electric meter on fire. When they arrived, Consumers Energy was already at the scene working on it. They had been notified about a smoking electric panel. The fire was put out quickly, but about twenty minutes later a second meter fire was reported in the same block. Again, the fire was extinguished quickly and fire staff cleared the area. Fire staff spoke to both homeowners, and there were no injuries. The cause has not been determined.
