New Deer Hunting Laws Implemented To Stop Disease Spread

Within the last 3 years, 60 free ranging deer have been discovered to have Chronic Wasting Disease, an illness which is fatal to the brain and nervous system, and is found in deer, elk and moose. Michigan officials are doing what they can to help prevent the spread of this disease by approving a series of deer hunting regulations intended to slow the spread of chronic wasting disease, which will affect Calhoun County hunters.

Amoung the regulations announced by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, are the ban of any attractants that have not been approved by the Archery Trade Association, an immediate ban on baiting and feeding in the 16-county area identified as the CWD Management Zone which includes Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Hillsdale, Ingham, Ionia, Isabella, Jackson, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Ottawa and Shiawassee counties.

Also, there is now a statewide ban on the use of all natural urine-based lures and attractants, except for lures that are approved by the Archery Trade Association.
