Western Michigan University (WMU) in Kalamazoo has implemented a new interim policy that's designed to make it easier for students and staff to report if they've been victims of sexual assault.

WMU expects the final version of the policy to be in place for the fall semester. An online feedback site has been set up to gather input.

After a complaint, the university will investigate the complaint and operate independent of any criminal charges and police investigation.

Other major features of the new policy are a list of carefully defined terms central to the issues of sexual misconduct. They include consent, force, coercion and incapacitation.
WMU officials say it began work on the policy before federal investigations into violations of Title IX at 85 colleges and universities, including three in Michigan.
