The Battle Creek Police Department (BCPD) is investigating the death of a newborn infant whose mother told police that she didn't know that she was pregnant.

Officers responded to the report of a unresponsive newborn at a residence on the 200 block of Oak Lawn Drive in Battle Creek shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to the police's press release. The woman had just given birth to the child in the home.

Officers assisted in giving medical attention to the child on scene, and authorities took the woman and child to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead.

The Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine performed an autopsy of the baby Wednesday, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer. The mother is in stable condition.

According to the press release, no charges are being sought at this time and the incident remains under investigation.
