The Kalamazoo City Commission and Parchment City Commission have both now voted to approve providing Parchment’s residents with Kalamazoo water.

MLive reports that Parchment is now hooked up to the Kalamazoo water system, and the pipes have been flushed in an effort to remove per and polyfleuroalkyl substances. Parchment residents will continue to pay their water bills to the City of Parchment, and the cost to the city for the Kalamazoo hookup is estimated to be $212,000 for the one year this agreement covers. When Governor Rick Snyder visited Parchment August 5, he said it was likely that the hookup to Kalamazoo will be the permanent solution.

Parchment residents shouldn't see an increase to their water rates.

For now, Parchment’s water remains unsafe to drink and residents are still being provided with bottled water.

In late July, officials discovered PFAS levels over 20 times the federal health advisory level in the system. At this time, it’s still not clear what introduced these chemical contaminants into the water.
