A Calhoun County house was destroyed, and its occupant suffered burns, in a fire that broke out early Sunday morning.

The Battle Creek Enquirer says that Pennfield Township fire crews responded to the 3000 block of White Rabbit Rd. after 6am Sunday, and found the flames had completely engulfed the home. Crews from Pennfield, Emmett, and Bedford Township worked to put out hotspots throughout the morning.

The home’s female occupant, Wanda Wellington, had managed to get outside before first responders arrived, and she suffered burns to her back and arms; she was taken to be treated at the hospital in Battle Creek. Two pets were inside the home as well, and they have not been located.

What caused this fire remains under investigation.
