High school boys’ varsity basketball district action began Monday night with the gym at Battle Creek Central hosting the Class “A” District opening round featuring the Holt Rams (16-4) and Battle Creek Central Bearcats (18-2).

It was a familiar sight on the high school hard boards as these two teams played each other just two weeks ago with the Bearcats coming out on top.  However, for the second straight year, as they did in 2013, Holt knocked Central out in the first round of the district play. This was a hard-fought, visibly physical game that found the Bearcats coming out on the losing end in double overtime 68-64.

A three-pointer by Mafiaion Joyner tied the game at 52 to send the game into overtime. In the first overtime, the Bearcats tied the game at 58 apiece to go into the second overtime. Central tied the score at 64 with 53-seconds remaining, but Holt pulled ahead as the final seconds came off the clock to go on to their 68-64 win.

Holt, who never trailed in this game and led by as many as 15-points, had three players scoring in double-digits. Colin Jones delivered 30-points for the Rams, followed by Don’Quall Jackson with 16-points and Trent Stone with 14-points.  Leading the scoring for Battle Creek Central were Curtis Trigg with 21-points, 17 coming in the second half, and Mohammed Albagami, who scored all of his 13-points in the second half.

Battle Creek Central finishes the 2013-2014 season with a record of 18 and 3.  Holt advances to the district semi-finals will face the Gull Lake Blue Devils who defeated the Lakeview Spartans 59-40 Monday night in the other Class “A” district match at Lakeview.
