Howe had an incredible career. He joined the Red Wings in 1946 and played in Detroit until 1971, and was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He then, in his 50's, he came out of retirement  with the new competing league,  the World Hockey Association and played along side his son's Mark and Marty Howe.

Howe played on four Stanley Cup winning teams in Detroit. He scored 801 regular season goals in the NHL, and over 1000, including his time in the WHA. The three Howes competed for three WHA titles, winning twice, as members of the Houston Aeros.

According to Wikipedia, in May 2015, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder announced that a new international bridge spanning the Detroit River would be named in honor of Howe. The Gordie Howe International Bridge is set to open in 2020.
