Michigan ranks as the most expensive state in the nation to own and operate a car, according to a new report.

24/7 Wall St. ranked states based on the cost of gas, repairs and maintenance and car insurance premiums.

Michigan topped the list at a total operating cost of $4,678, with much of that cost due to the state's high insurance premiums.

Pete Kuhnmuench (KOON-mench) of the Insurance Institute of Michigan blames the state's no fault law and unlimited medical coverage for higher premiums.

He says Michigan also lacks limits on medical services and treatments.

24/7 Wall St. says Michigan's average insurance premium is $2,476, the most expensive in the country.
