Diane Froelich readily admits she does not view retirement the same way many folks do. At least as far as restaurant retirement is concerned, anyway.

The retired nurse and her family are known as the original owners of The Pizza Parlor on West Michigan Avenue and Custer Drive in Urbandale. We visited The Pizza Parlor during our first stop on the new 95.3 WBCK Restaurant Road Tour.

Known for their pizza and burritos, the Froelich's - well known in Urbandale since 1978 when The Pizza Parlor opened - tried to place the results of their hard work in the hands of new owners.

Four times.

Now, after the fourth and final attempt failed and the property reverted back to the Froelich's (all four deals were land contracts), they have recently reopened and begun operating the business again. Just like they used to; just like locals remember.

Diane has dusted off all her family recipes - pizza sauce and burrito sauce included - and gone back to work. She doesn't want Urbandale to lose its go-to spot.
