A second internet scam involving the sale of shoes and counterfeit money has taken place in the greater Battle Creek area.

The first incident took place, on Thursday, at the Lakeview Square Mall, involving a juvenile who sold shoes to a male suspect who paid with a counterfeit $100 dollar bill.

A friend of the juvenile, knowing of the rip-off, then noticed the shoes offered for sale on Facebook. The juvenile made arrangements with the suspect, to buy the shoes on Friday and then contacted the Battle Creek Police.

The Police were at the mall, at the designated time and arrested the suspects. An investigation resulted in finding the stolen shoes, along with marijuana and crack cocaine.

Three males ages 18, 19, and 20 were arrested on drug charges. One male age 19 was arrested for possession of stolen property. A warrant request is being submitted on a fifth male age 20 for the original fraud using counterfeit money as he was not in the vehicle.

The second incident took place Friday, in Pennfield Township, where the victim had arranged on Facebook to sell a pair of shoes to buyers from the Sturgis area.

Following the transaction, the victim noticed that the $100 dollar bill was bogus and followed the suspects to a residence on Coolidge near North Avenue.

At approximately 2:00 PM, the victim contacted the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department and upon their arrival, they observed a 42 year-old male fleeing the scene.

He was apprehended several blocks away and found to be in possession of heroin and cocaine. The suspect was also found to have numerous warrants for his arrest. Deputies continued their investigation at the house and arrested another 22-year-old male on an outstanding warrant.

The shoes in question were located inside the house and returned to their owner. Another 21-year-old suspect has also been identified. Both suspects were lodged at the Calhoun County Jail.

The 42-year-old Battle Creek man is being charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver Heroin and Possession with Intent to Deliver Cocaine.
