The City of Battle Creek now has a new Vice Mayor!

In July, Vice Mayor and Ward 5 Commissioner Dave Walters announced that he was stepping down from his position. At the time, he cited professional and private reasons for his leaving.

The search began immediately for his replacement, and on July 31 the City Commission appointed attorney Jim Lance to serve out the remainder of Walters' term as Ward 5 Commissioner. That term expires in 2020, at which point Lance could choose to run again.

However, that appointment didn't settle the matter of who would serve as Vice Mayor. That vote was taken by the commissioners on Tuesday, August 21, and according to the City of Battle Creek's Facebook page they chose Commissioner Sherry Sofia. Sofia was elected as an at-large commissioner in November 2017, and will serve as Vice Mayor until this November.

The Commission in November will choose their Mayor and Vice Mayor once again, for terms that last one year.
