Should Michigan Get Rid Of Pistol Registration?
Did you know that Michigan is one of only 6 states which mandates that a person cannot purchase, carry, possess or transport a pistol in the state without having obtained a license to do so?
Well State Representatives Lee Chatfield, a Republican from Levering, just introduced a bill to eliminate that law. House bill 4554 would make it optional to register your pistol with the state and it would also eliminate the $250 fine for not registering your pistol. It would also allow those who have already registered their pistol with the state to request that the Michigan State Police remove their information from the registry.
State Rep. Chatfield stated in a press release:
There is no need for state government to maintain an exhaustive list of law-abiding citizens who legally purchase pistols. Criminals don't register handguns they misuse for wrong, so what we end up with is a list that intrudes on the civil liberties of honest gun owners exercising their constitutional right to defend their families
