Monday Fountain St. Fire Listed As Suspicious

The City of Battle Creek says that firefighters were called around 1am Monday to a home in the 100 block of W. Fountain St, to find a small fire blazing on the exterior wall of a home. The fire was extinguished quickly, and crews dispersed smoke from the scene.

ATV Crash Kills Portage Businessman October 11

According to his family, 34-year-old Jesse Albrecht died Wednesday; he had been riding an ATV on October 6 in the Houghton Lake Area, when he crashed into a tree head-on. He had been wearing a helmet, but still suffered severe and ultimately fatal injuries.

Animals Seized In Calhoun County Cockfighting Investigation

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 3000 block of 3 ½ mile Rd. in Athens around noon Friday, and while they were there they were advised of possible animal cruelty taking place in the area. Deputies responded later with a search warrant.

McCamly Street To Close For Railroad Crossing Work October 16

The City says that starting Monday, October 16, McCamly St. between Dickman and Hamblin will be closed as the median near the railroad track is worked on. This work is a part of the ongoing effort to make crossings safer in the city’s quiet zone, where trains are prohibited from blowing horns.

10 Dogs Rescued In Anti-Dog Fighting Operation In Calhoun County

The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office says search warrants were executed Tuesday at three locations in the county, and at one home in Portage. At one home in Battle Creek, no dogs were found, but over a pound a marijuana was, so a 31-year-old man was arrested on drug charges.
